20 things Amber

Timmi | The Mom Stuff | Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

1. She is an amazing hair stylist.

2. Almost an entire wall in her bedroom is a mural she painted.

3. Almost an entire other wall is covered in photos of her friends.

4. There is a star in the galaxy named “Amber Destiny.” It is named for my kid.

5. She does not like Reeses.

6. She started walking at 11 months.

7. She has one dimple that you see often, when she smiles just right, you can see the other one.

8. She separates her candy by color and then eats them.

9. She will separate broken pieces and eat them first and save the “pretty” ones for last.

10. Her middle name came from a prayer spoken about her before she was born.

11. She loves Hot Tamales.

12. She has an unnatural fear of Care Bears.

13. When she was little, she would confuse the word “bathroom” with the word “vacuum” (I have to go to the vacuum, mom!)

14. She called her grandma “grandpa” for a few months.

15. Some of her most favorite stuff from childhood was made by Lisa Frank.

16. She has a small Barbie collection.

17. She started changing the world the day she was born.

18. Her parents were madly in love with each other when she was made – then they were madly in love with her.

19. She is hardly ever bored – even as a little kid. There was just too much to do, too many things to make, and occasionally, destroy.

20. When she was born, we lived in a little blue house on a main street in Lawrenceville, Va. On the night of the seventh day of her life, her father took her outside lifted her to the heavens and said “Behold, the only thing greater than yourself.” It’s from a scene in the TV movie “Roots” (Omora and son Kunta Kinte). It was clear and cool and the sky was full of stars. It may sound corny, but it was a beautiful moment – and one of many I have had with my daughter during the last two decades.

May they never end.

I love you.

Mom

  3. The strongest memory I have of your dad: he had just got the Nintendo game system, and we stayed up until 3 or 4 in the morning playing Super Mario Brothers. Everytime we’d figure out another cheat, we’d get so excited. He was so vibrant, so charismatic, so fucking cool. I wanted him to do right by your mom, not because I loved your mom (although that was a big part of it) but because that night I could see why your mom loved him.

The strongest memory I have of your mom: there are so many moments frozen into my brain, pictures of her laughing and smiling and crying and being so gloriously alive. But when I think of your mom, I think of notes passed back and forth in high school. I think of KFC (Kids For Christ) and the walkathon. I think of the only woman other than Janet Jackson that made me seriously hate being gay. Even though I wouldn’t have had a chance with her even if I was straight, LOL.

When I think of you, I think of this beautiful marshmallow baby, so impossibly sweet and squishy good, so perfectly gorgeous, radiating love and happiness and contentment. You were literally a creation of light and goodness. You were a beautiful baby and you turned into such a beautiful person.

Your mom is proud of you because she’s your mom, but she’s also proud of you because anyone that’s ever had the chance to know you at all would be proud of you.

    You shine.

And it’s pretty damn cool to watch you shine. :-)
